STORIES OF NEWVILLE TOLD TO ROGER WARD BY HUGH BOWMAN
Hugh Bowman was the grandfather of Roger Ward . Roger's mother, Majorie was Hugh's only daughter. One evening in the late 50,s around the summer of 1959 my Grand father and I were sitting on his back porch of his house on Bunker Hill North Road. We were looking at the moon and speculating about men walking on the moon. Grand father was commenting that he was born in 1901 before the Wright brothers had flown and now men were planning on traveling into space.
Some how the subject changed to things that happened in Newville when he was a young man and how he had worked on a huxster wagon trading with the local farmers for produce to sell in his brother's (Hoy) general store . Grandfather told me about his favorite horse "Fan" he said the horse was very smart and trustworthy. He said while he was dating my Grand mother Grace Bemiller, that he would take her home from a date then wrap the reins aroud the whip stand then curl up on the seat and go to sleep. Fan would then proceed to go home on her own and Grandfather would wake up in his own barn. He would unhitch the horse and go to bed. He noted that he had bought Fan in a nieghboring town of Perrysville. One summer day he had taken grandmother to a outing some where between Newville and Perrysville. He did his normal routine and went to sleep in the buggy but to his suprise he woke up in a strange barn Fan had went to the barn of her previous owner who lived close to Perrysville. Fan had decided that she would return to her old home..Another time Grandfather told me he was driving a team of horses hitched to a sleigh on a cold winter day . He said he knew he had a fast team. Another sleigh with two boys challenged him to a race.. Grandfather let his team run head and head with them then he let them pull ahead.. As they went ahead he dropped in behind them ,then he urged his horses up untill the hot, steamy slobbering breath from his team was blasting down on the heads of the boys in the sligh ahead. The boys tried to speed up , but Grandfather's team was stronger and faster and they could not get away fianally he took mercy on them and he pulled out and passed them.
One of his favorite stories he would tell me was about a mare that had a problem well I guess I'll call it a bladder problem. I don't remember if she belonged to grandfather or his brother Hoy. This mare could not conrtol her water if she was going downhill and the single tree of the buggy rig was hitting her in the back of her rear legs. When the single tree hit he legs she would lift her tail and relieif her self . This would give the passengers in the buggy a unwanted nasty shower.
Hoy and grandfather over come the situation by tying a piece of twine around the horse's tail then tying the other end around the single tree .This would prevent the mare from lifting her tail and she would not release her water. Grandfather said they sold the horse to a local young man in Newville and they explained the need for the twine. Some time later their was a ice cream social in Newville . Hoy had asked a girl to go with him but she turned him down she had adate with the man that they had bought the mare. Niether Grandfather or Hoy had a date so they were going to the social with out dates. On their way they passed the house of the girl that had turned Hoy down . Out in front of her house tied to the hitching rail stood the mare with her tail tied down. Hoy walked over and cut the twine ,then they went on to to social. "Oh" did I mention that from her house to Newville was down hill ? My grandfather said the young man and his date never made it to the social.
