Allen served in the War of 1812 under Capt. Enos Buell,(Com. Samuel Hough at Stonington, CT. July 18 to Sept. 16, 1813. Allen and Editha House moved from Connecticut to New York State in 1816. They became members of the Methodist E. church in Ovid, N.Y. The family then moved to Romulus, Seneca Ct., N.Y.(Florence Wenk Woodard Barrett, descendant of Nelson W. House, son of Allen and Editha House).
The Allen House family came to Michigan in 1835. They came to buffalo via canal and then from Buffalo to Detroit, MI by steamboat. The went by wagon to Pontiac where they left their things and started out for Brighton on foot. Mr. Allen House worked in a mill on the site of Fosterville, MI. He took up land from the Government on Section 7, MIlford Twp. Oakland Co., MI. His claim consisted of 91 acres and when it was secure he had just fourteen shillings left. It was used to purchase a large kettle. He was a miller and woolcarder, so secured work in a mill at $20.00 per month. His family lived in an old schoolhouse until he could build a log cabin. The family subsisted upon potatoes, butter and milk, almost entirely, for some time. In those early days, Mr. House sold eggs. (Related by Descendant of Nelson W. House).
