Anna was born 1810 in Pennsylvania. She died Jun 19 1888 in Butler Cemetary, Richland County, Ohio. Anna married Willis Clark about 1828 in probobly Pennsylvania.

Jacob Ward [scrapbook] was born about 1838 in Probobly Knox County, Ohio. He died Aug 4 1864 in Hampton Hospital, Virginia. Jacob married Ann Margaret Heldenbrand on Mar 20 1862 in Richland County, Ohio.

This is a narritive written by my Uncle about Jacob and the Regiment he served with.


The Regiment was organized at Camp Chase*, Ohio, May 12, 1864 to serve one hundred days. It was composed of the Forty-eighth Regiment Ohio National Guard, from Richland County; Seventy-second Battalion, Ohio National Guard, from Henry County; Ninety-sixth Battalion, Ohio National Guard, from Ashland County; and the Ninty- ninth Battalion, Ohio National Guard from Stark County. On the 13th of May the Regiment proceeded to Washington City, under orders from General Heintzelman, commanding the Department of Ohio. It was assigned to duty with headquarters at Fort Reno D.C., where it remained untill the 8th of June, when it was ordered to the front, and proceeded in transports to White House, Va. and thence to Bermuda Hundred. It reported to General Butler, at Point of Rocks, on the 12th of June, and on the 14th took part in a reconnaissance on the Petersburg and Richmond Railroad. Two hundred and fifty men of the One Hundred and sixty-third were engaged in a severe skirmish on the 15th, and on the 16th it proceeded to Wilson's Landing, and from that point made several reconnaissance to the west side of the James. On the 29th of August the Regiment was relieved from duty, and proceeded to Columbus, Ohio. and was mustered out September 10, 1864, on expiration of term of service.

Ann Margaret Heldenbrand [Parents] [scrapbook] was born Jan 14 1840 in Richland County, Ohio. She died Aug 23 1866 in Richland County, Ohio. Ann married Jacob Ward on Mar 20 1862 in Richland County, Ohio.

Ann Margaret had a son with William Clark named Charles L Heldenbrand. His name was changed to Ward when Ann tried to get Jacob Ward's pension after his death. After she died, the pension for him was disallowed.

Charles Heldenbrand was a farmer from Pennsylvania. He reported to the government on the actual parentage of his grandson, Charles L. Ward.

Cathrine was born 1813 in Pennsylvania. She married Charles Heldenbrand.

Henry H. Hoover was supposed to have served in the war of 1812. One of his children was killed in a wood cutting accident. I am unsure if he was born in Maryland or Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth Poffenberger [Parents] was born Jul 3 1800 in Virginia. She died Jun 20 1879 in Richland County, Ohio. Elizabeth married Henry H. Hoover on Jun 11 1811 in Fredrick county, Maryland.

I have hid a dead end with Thomas. He is probobly not the immigrant, but I cannot find any definitive proof of who his parents were. There were VanZile's in New York as early as 1700, but I can't find a link.
